My daughter just returned from a trip to New Zealand and brought back a pair of socks made from 50% merino wool, 40% possum fur and 10% silk. NZ manufacturers claim they are very popular in NZ and actually warmer than wool socks alone. Since it's still very hot here they probably won't get tested out for a few months. Do you NZ chaps have a tradition of using possum fur for clothing or is this for gullible tourists? Should I start collecting/recycling local road kill in Georgia for a new business venture?

Our possums are the Australian unit, imported here as an amusement no doubt in the 1800's. The problem is that it competes with our native boids and destroys our native trees, particularly our much loved pohutakawa.
So they're a pest . You'll be put in jail for killing one in Aussie and applauded here. Ranch? hell no, that'd be highly illegal... all trapped , poisoned and shot in the bush.
Really good fur.

edit:Here ya go . "1837 to establish a fur trade".

Sadly, now mostly made in China.

There are a lot of blended yarn products around though....I've got a merino and alpaca scarf.....mmmmm nice.

Certainly is nice fur. Don't try to pat one though, the teeth and claws are sharp. Use to catch the little buggers when I was a kid.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that when a possum is tearing around inside your house... where you have a very young baby...., that a hammer is a very effective weapon.....

Wonderful knits, but pricey.

I've got possum/merino jumpers, socks, vests, gloves, and a cap. Just the thing for Wyoming cold.

Swanndri is great (now made in China?) We visited the outlet in Timaru a few years back and scooped up some bargains. Icebreakers makes fine merino t-necks and brilliant vests and jackets. For the ladies, Bay Road merino tops are a wonderful gift.

The Australasian possum is a horrible pest. Fur, without the guilt.

The possums down our way wear hob nailed boots. You should hear them tearing round on the roof!

Yeah.... this is one of my local ones.... the miserable sod moved in to the nest box I put up for the Rainbow Lorikeets.... I think it may have been responsible for squashing the first brood to death... but the Lorikeets, with a little help from me have won the war and just fledged their second successfull brood.

You reckon it had any night vision after that photo?
