Among most Allied nations, August 15 is known as V-P (Victory in the Pacific) Day.
In Japan, it's known as "the day for mourning of war dead and praying for peace."
In Korea, it's Liberation Day.

One of the most famous pictures of WWII, "The Kiss at Time's Square".
I've heard it said that it was staged. The caption at LIFE attributes this to the photographer -

Aug 14, 1945
The sailor was "running along the street grabbing any and every girl in sight," photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt said of his famous shot. "Whether she was a grandmother, stout, thin, old, didn't make any difference."

Look at her hands, one is grasping her ass, and the other isn't seen, but I'll bet it's pushing him away..

You can see her right hand, it's up by her right ... shoulder. Looks like she's holding a hanky.

Staged or not, it certainly caught the emotion of the moment.

We had a similar event in Martin Place (our Times Square equivalent). It was of a young man captured on film, dancing among the streamers.

There were many claimants to being the young man, but it is now known to be the father of a former colleague of mine - and funnily enough, the last few times I have seen him, has been when I've bumped into him in Martin Place.

Crossed posts there Gary - I was reading the article about the woman looking back at him.... then I hit the send button and saw I was beaten to the punch...
