I was in the news shop today leafing through Watercraft magazine. (No, I didn't buy it because I know Carl doesn't allow it.) Anyway, WC #76, page 31 we have Paul Gartside giving his address as Shelburne, Nova Scotia.
Is this the beginning of a west coast braindrain?

Yes. And you forgot to mention the free plans for Paul's Pocket Gaff Cruiser that are included in the magazine. With offsets. :)
You obviously have more self control than I do, Basil, I brought the issue home with me. :D

Funny. You don't look like a mushroom. ;)
Shelburne has quite a history of shipbuilding. At one point there were seven shipyards in town, the longest-lasting of which (Muir-Cox Shipyard and the John Williams Dory Shop) have become parts of the NS Museum complex, one of which (Muir-Cox) is still open to building contracts. The town is virtually a time-capsule from the early years of the last century, full of victorian-era houses and shops, most in unrestored condition. Real estate values are very low and Shelburne boasts one of the best ice-free harbours in the north-east corner of the continent. There is a nice little yacht club with excellent facilities and a cast of supporting industries (welders, riggers, slipway, etc.) to make it a fine boaty town. Mr. Gartside done good, IMHO.

A lot of Shelburne was fixed up some years ago by a major film studio. They did a great job and the town is a really lovely one, well worth visiting. Having Paul there REALLY makes it worth visiting. A Power Ball win would let me have my ocean vacation house there.
5 years ago, the Dory Shop was still operating, though as a small boat building school.
