These guys really sound like real professionals, in good shape. When I guarded at a beach on Long Island Sound, all we needed to do was pass the Red Cross Senior Life Saving course. We did not have any surf either.

My brother races these boats both in singles and doubles out of Strathmere, NJ. Although I can definitely not keep up with him, I have no problems taking our family's Van Duyne out in the surf.
Its all technique. I am far from in great shape, but I know how to put my weight against the oars. I really believe anyone can with practice.
Lifeguard boats are much more fun than ocean kayaks, and hold a lot more people.

Strathmere is a great place. My daughter's in-laws all get together there on July 4. The family patriarch 'publishes a daily paper' of the previous day's doings and schedule for the upcoming day: The Strathmere Harold :D
