We've just built a new companionway door (its a split door french style, btw) and don't want to weaken it by installing the mortise lock that was in it (a regular house-door mortise lock, btw) so now I'm looking for a nice brass or bronze door lock that can be installed on the inside of the door allowing a handle, lever, whatever on the outside. I've seen such things on other wooden boats but really have no idea where I might find something like this. Furniture locks usually have just a key hole on the outside and no knob or anything on the inside...so...any ideas or sources?

Thanks!

It's not clear to me what you expect from the latch--actually locking the door, keeping from swinging open, or securing it in a seaway. The latter might require a solid bolt, while the others may need a lockable padeye, or a simple cabinet latch. Also--does it have to be accessible from both inside and out?
We've used some brass cabinet latches for cupboard doors, that latch from one side only. Any photos?

I'm sure there is some really pricey marine latches out there, but some of these are bronze and might work -- much depends on the interior springs and other bits and bobs being rust-free.

Oh, thanks all! for the links and ideas for storm door or screen door. CanoeYawl--where'd that come from? It looks very promising!

And, my camera isn't available so I can't do pics right now, I'm sorry. I think I need to just get another digital camera... I suppose that means MG won't show me "his"....

Nothing fancy here--just a french-style door that needs to stay closed, be accessed from inside and outside. We figured we could always lock with a padlock on the outside if need be but it would be nice if this had a lock associated with it.

Thanks again--and I hope CanoeYawl comes back soon with a response :)

You'll need some type of head and foot bolt as well or at least one head OR foot, most times you don't really need both, but it is traditional to have both.

Thank you for bringing that up.

We have a spring-loaded foot bolt that goes into the bottom (threshold) of the companionway. It was on the old companionway doors. There's nothing at the top where the sliding companionway hatch slides over the top of these french doors.

Hey Andrew, is Classic Marine a distributor for Davey and Company London Ltd (http://www.davey.co.uk/)? or do they make their own stuff too? Their stuff looks real similar.

When I asked Moray McPhail who owns Classic Marine for something really obscure in the brass/bronze door fittings line, a slim brass flush bolt, he sent me here:

If The Bath Knob Shop don't have it, it probably cannot exist.
