Good Day Folks,
I am new to the Wooden Boat Forum and I need your help.
I have just come into posession of an old mahogany boat and I have no idea what make it is or if it is in good condition.
It looks like it needs some new ribs to the inside. I honestly don't know.
It is going to be a project for the next couple years, so if she needs a lot of work that's ok.
Definitely needs some sanding and tlc.
It came with a 40 horse Johnson(made in 1960).
Hasn't seen the light of day in 36 years.

Thanks for any help you can give me guys.

No idea what it is,other than something that could have come from a time capsule. It seems very nicely preserved and would probably justify your efforts to get some enjoyment from it.If you continue to post pictures and ask questions there are sure to be some knowledgeable people here to advise you.

Thanks Bob;
That helps. It looks like a Century a wee bit.
There is so much missing on the inside.
This baby doesn't have any ribs at all. Just the mahogany varnished on the inside.
I have taken out the old seats. The cushions were fine , but the old frame work was done poorly. Obviously not original. Whoever did it, managed to use 3 different kinds of screws and even a couple of spikes for goodness sakes.
So what I have now is a stripped down shell. Something to start with. Starting with the bottom first.

Lots of work, but lots of fun, too.

Thanks for your input

Welcome to the forum.

Just to be clear, a molded mahogany boat like that never had any ribs and did not need any.

Looks like it could be a real head turner without too much work.

Have you checked with the Antique and Classic Boat Society?

She's a molded veneer hull. There were dozens if not hundreds of boat makers that made such animals: Dunphy, Carver, Wagemaker, MiloCraft, Delta, Whirlwind, etc...

Volume IV of "The Real Runabouts" book by Mr. Bob Speltz has a series of chapters on various molded veneer power boat builders.

I think it may be a Whirlwind....

After some investigating I have discovered that the Johnson is a 40 horse long shaft built in 1960.
After being put away for 36 years I figure it's going to need some work, but everything sems to be in good shape.
It is the last thing I am going to deal at this time.

http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx63/bucko_04/th_DADSBOAT002-1.jpg The seats and floor are now out. Down to the bare hull inside. No rot (as expected).
The seat frames and floor were held down with 3 different kinds of screws and spikes if you can believe it. No real damage done.
I can now turn her over and start some serious sanding to the bottom.Don't worry, I will be gentle. Curious to know what I will find there. I will keep you informed.
