Yesterday applied first coat of Captains amber varnish to the new Mahogany trim piece on my transom . Thinned 30% good penetration.
This afternoon sanded with 320 and wiped clean. Applied second coat thinned 10%. Went to clean up and noticed my mistake. I thinned this second coat with denatured alcohol instead of paint thinner. Almost the identical looking can. Flow and appearance was good. Anyone foresee any problems???

Don't set your coffee cup down next to the thinner...;)

When I used denatured (thinned) alcohol to clean a varnished surface after sanding, it sometimes gets "rubbery" I'd let the first and second coats cure for a good three days back to "hard", then lightly sand, clean and don't sin again.

This is just a "guess" and I could be completely full of beans.. just being cautious... there, now the zealots can calm down...

Put a red piece of tape on that alcohol can. No harm done other than to you ego. I never go finer than 220 for varnish, stain or otherwise.
Finer than that and the surface tooth is lost, blisters may result.

My thoughts exactly - #320 is too fine, no tooth
