Just wondering if anyone out there has tried the Silvertip line of resins and what the diference is with standard resin. I've read that it gives you a longer working time but would like advise from someone who has used it. Is it good enough to warrant the price?

This may be the wrong forum for discussions of epoxy. Not too much support or interest in it here.

I have not used the Silvertip...but here are my understandings;

*No blush with any of the various hardeners.
*Thinner viscosity means better penetration of wood and easier to apply.

With the cost of resin going up anyway, the Silvertip is expensive! I dont know of any builders that are willing to go to the expense Vs. the benefits. Might look at Mas epoxy products. Devlin is using them now.

Lots of epoxy users here but I haven't heard of Sivertip except that I think someone else asked about it here not too long ago. What is the supposed difference between it and 'standard' resin, pray tell?

AIJ-well I have used the silver tip- and I used the fancy smancy filleting blend they have been touting. My advice- stick with the system three clear coat for coatings, use the general purpose resin for everything else. I saw absolutely no advantage in silver tip- and the filleting stuff actually ran off my spatula before I could form it. To their credit when I complained, System three sent me a new formulation of the filleting stuff -but I still had to mix silica thickener with it to form a proper fillet. Stick with general purpose- change hardeners to meet desired set up conditions, and mix in whatever goop you need for the job.

I've not tried the Silvertip resin, but the fairing compound worked well for my purposes. I liked that the applications could be hand sanded after a few hours.

I used the silvertip for a bunch of different applications last spring. It certainly does wet out cloth more easily than their standard resin. As Dale noted above, their clearcoat is even thinner and thus wets out more easily, but I think the clearcoat doesn't have the cured strength that the silvertip does. I could be wrong though, it's been a while since my last read of The Epoxy Book.

Anyway, my personal policy is to use S3's standard resin for all adhesive, fairing, filleting, and other general epoxy work. I use the Silvertip only for wetting-out cloth.
